What is Shotokan Karate?
Shotokan karate is an effective self-defence martial art originating from Okinawa, Japan. The term Shotokan directly translates to 'House of Shoto' which was founded by Gichin Funakoshi, the "Father of Modern Karate" ('Shoto' being his pen name in calligraphy). Shotokan places emphasis on character building and developing a sound mind and body to withstand the difficulties and oppurtinties faced in daily life.
Shotokan karate is practiced worldwide and its effectiveness (in terms of combat alone) has been tested in the UFC through the legendary Lyoto Machida. Lyoto's Father Yoshizo Machida is the long time Chairman & Chief Instructor of JKA Brazil.
